Wall Hung vs. Floor Mounted

There are a few types of systems to consider when creating your custom closet: a Wall Hung Closet, Floor Mounted Closet, or a combination of the two. All of these optionsshould provide you with the storage you need, but one might suityour needs better than another.

A Wall Hung Closet System attachesto the wall usinga steel rail that is securedat the studs. Wall Hung systems do not extendto the floor because these systems float above the floor, cleaning or changing out flooring are much easier with this type of closet.

If you do choose a Wall Hung system, make sure that the company you purchase from offers a warranty. If any of the panels break or become detached from the wall, they should be repaired at no cost to you. While this rarely happens, and Wall Hung systems work quite well, you want to be protected just in case.

A Floor Mounted Closet System sits on the floor and is attached to the wall with brackets to assure that the units cannot be pulled forward. Since Floor Mounted systems go all the way to the floor, installation may require the removal of the base trim in certain spots, or in some cases, entirely from the closet for proper installation. Due to the extra support of the floor, there are structural advantages for having this type of system. These include the possibility for deeper shelving and the ability to hold more weight.

Some of the aesthetic perks of a floor mounted closet include their flexibility and overall look. Since the side panels extend all the way to the floor, customerscan add or edit shelves, doors and drawers. Theres also more flexibility in the overall style of the system with options for adding more extensive doors and molding. The installation style also gives it the sophisticated look of built-in furniture.

Its not uncommon to see a combination of these two systems, with some sections wall-hanging and some floor mounted. Take a look at thisgallery of custom closetsand see if you can spot each type of closet type.

Long Hang vs. Short Hang

Custom closets can have many different configurations but besides it looking fabulous, you also need it to be functional. Depending on the inventory in your closet, you could have long hanging, short hanging and a combination of both sections in your dream closet.

Long Hanging sections are 72 inches high and are great for formal wear, dresses, and outerwear such as jackets and coats.

Short Hanging section are anywhere between 30-42 inches high and are great for shirts, skirts and folded over pants.

With custom closets, some closet companies even offer the ability to have double and triple hanging sections that allow you to utilize the height of the wall to accommodate more hanging space. Your ceiling height would have to be at least 9 ft high ceiling or more for a combination option of the short hang above the long hanging section. With the short hanging above the long hanging section, you can use a pull-down mechanism or a static rod with a Sheppards hook.

Pull-downs are more convenient than a static rod and are great for seasonal items. The static hanging rods are cheaper than the pull-downs but require a Sheppards hook to reach those items hanging on that second or third section.

Drawer Stacks

Drawer stacks are a great way to have additional storage to provide a beautiful built-in look. Jewelry drawers are a really popular addition inside of the drawer stacks as it looks like a plain drawer but on the inside has acrylic cubbies to keep everything neat and organized. The landing space above the drawer stacks is also an immense bonus to aid you in getting dress and a way to display your perfume or cologne.

Your Pinterest dreams are mostly possible depending on the size of your closet space and the functionality. No one wants a great looking closet that they cant fit their entire inventory after the customizations. Out with the basic rod and shelf that was in place when you bought your home and in with the new of closet customizations of your dreams.
